Computational Design for Graphic Statics

by Dr Marina Konstantatou, Design Systems Analyst, SMG Research Lead @ Foster + Partners

Abstract

Contemporary advancements in Computer Aided Design (CAD) and progress in fundamental theory usher in a bidirectional analysis and design paradigm of structurally expressive, materially efficient forms. The first part of this talk will focus on the development and applications of a theoretical framework for the design and analysis of compression-and-tension spatial structures in static equilibrium. The second part will discuss the applied research conducted at Foster + Partners, Specialist Modelling Group on computational design challenges in relation to Additive Manufacturing and extreme environments in the extra-terrestrial lunar and Martian context.
